Miss Robin's Story

Music has always been in my life! The sweetness of my mother singing to wake me in the morning, the wonder and magic of driving to Boston with my father to see and hear the Boston Symphony Orchestra for the first time, and having fun making music with my whole family throughout the years. These are just some of my fondest memories of music and how it has shaped my life and relationships since childhood. My passion and fondness for music has grown to be a formative and integral aspect of who I am as a person and a teacher.

I started learning violin at age nine. Upon moving to New Jersey I continued to take private violin lessons at the Monmouth Conservatory of Music in Red Bank, New Jersey. Then I studied music at Depauw University in Indiana graduating with a Bachelors of Music Education. During that time, I was fortunate to have wonderful teachers and performed in various youth orchestras throughout the country and internationally.

Following college I started my family, then returned to New Jersey and began teaching private violin lessons at home. Soon after, I started teaching violin at the Monmouth Conservatorhy of Music In Red Bank. During this time I took Suzuki Violin Teacher Training and became a certified Suzuki violin teacher. I found this valuable because I learned more about early childhood music education and teaching in a group setting. I took time off from the Monmouth Conservatory of Music to raise and support my six wonderful children and I continued to teach private lessons at home. I returned to the Monmouth Conservatory of Music to teach private violin. In this time I performed in the chamber orchestra, taught and directed Monmouth Conservatory of Music's outreach program for Red Bank public schools and studied the Irish fiddle with a leading contemporary Irish fiddler. I also taught Irish fiddle lessons and was Music Director for a local chapter of the Comhaltas, an organization tha promotes traditional music, dance and Irish curltre around the world.

Most recently I've continued to teach private lessons at home and enjoyed assisting my sister Ellen Gunn Artistic Director at the Monmouth Academy of Ballet where I arranged and performed the music for her school's 2019 spring performance of "5 Pieces".

Over the years I’ve taught students from the very young to the very mature and truly believe that music is for everyone. We know that learning music starting as early as birth is beneficial to a child’s development. As a violin teacher I know that achieving basic music competence in their youth can be a helpful beginning for learning how to sing, dance or play a musical instrument.

My long standing desire to teach a foundational music class for infants, toddlers and preschoolers ultimately led to my decision to do it. After exploring various options my father, a life long music enthusiast, and I enrolled in a teacher training workshop with Music Together® Worldwide. I fell in love with the Music Together Program and realized it was how I wanted to share music with children and the families that love them.

In January 2020 my father and I established Music Together Two River and became registered Music Together teachers. We are proud and delighted to offer kids' music classes to families in the Greater Red Bank area.
